What is Guru Nanak Jayanti?
The Guru Nanak Jayanti is one of the most important festivals in Sikhism and it is being celebrated on Kartik Poornima which is basically the fifteen lunar days of Kartik month. If we talk about the Gregorian calendar then, this day falls usually in the month of November. The purpose of this festival is to celebrate the birthday of the first Sikh Guru the Guru Nanak Saab. As of 2022, it is the 553rd birthday of Guru Nanak which is going to be celebrated in the month of November 2022.
2 days prior to Guru Nanak Jayanti, people use to visit Gurdwara to recite Guru Granth Sahib for 48 hours. It is commonly known as Akhand Path. After this, they organize Nagarkirtan which is basically a procession and consists of five men also known as Panj Pyare. These Panj Pyare hold the Sikh triangular flag, Nishan Sahib during this procession. Later, they place Guru Grant Sahib in a palanquin and sing hymns in groups. They also play different musical instruments during this event and display martial art skills of Sikhism. This procession passes through different streets and people décor these streets with flags and flowers.
After this, they went to Langar in which offer food to anyone including the needy, poor, and rich without any discrimination of caste and creed. This langar is organizing in the memory of Guru Nanak as his father gave him some money during childhood to do Sacha Sauda. Instead of doing business with that money, guru Nanak purchased some food and spread it among saints who were hungry for days. On asking, Guru Sahib replied that isn’t it a true business?
